Herpes may spread through skin contact with a person who is affected. It is spread through the breaks in the skin and through moisture in the skin or any area. In some cases it is sexually transmitted. Use condoms to avoid sexual transmission. Wash your hands with soap if you touch the sore to prevent it spreading to other parts of your body. Women who have active outbreak of herpes during the last month of pregnancy are at the highest risk of transmitting the virus to the infant. If a man has an active outbreak of genital herpes, it is recommended to avoid intercourse with their pregnant partner to prevent transmission of this virus to the infant. They may look at alternatives to intercourse.

Types of Herpes

Herpes is caused due to two types of Herpes Simplex Virus which include Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2. Both types of virus can cause genital herpes and oral herpes. The HSV type 1 usually infects the lips. The infection of the lips results in ores called fever blisters or cold sores. The HSV type 1 can also infect the genital area and produce sores in that area. The HSV type 2 usually causes genital herpes. The HSV type 2 can also infect the mouth during oral sex. A person who has genital herpes can pass or transmit the virus to an uninfected person during sex.

Symptoms

The symptoms of this infection may be itching, pain or a burning sensation in the area in which it is going to appear. Once it appears, it will look like an insect bite or a chicken pox lesion and in some cases it appears like pimples. A person who is affected with the herpes simplex virus may not get the symptoms at least for a month. Some of the other common symptoms of herpes include watery blisters on the genitals that burst and become painful open sores, blisters around mouth when blisters appear on the genitals, painful, itchy genital area, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, pain while urinating for women, lymph nodes located in the groin swelling up during the first attack, and headache if viral meningitis which is an infection of the membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord, develops. Meningitis is commonly associated with the herpes virus.

Prevention

Increased number of sexual partners results in higher chances of a person contracting the herpes disease. Therefore, limiting the number of partners will be a major step forward in the prevention of herpes. After the development of sores on the body, one need to avoid intimate contact with others to help prevent the spreading of herpes. Before the sores develop, one could experience itching, burning, or tingling. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during this time. There are chance of one contracting the herpes disease even when there are no sores or symptoms. To minimize the risk of spreading herpes, latex condoms should be used during all sexual contact.

Yet another way in which the herpes virus could spread is by touching the sores and then touching another part of the body. Whenever you touch the sores, you need to wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible to avoid touching the other parts of the body and infect the other areas. Also, avoid sharing of towels or clothing with anyone. Babies can be infected with the herpes virus. Pregnant women getting exposed to anyone with herpes can result in the baby getting affected with herpes. Adequate precautions can be taken at the time of delivery to protect the baby from getting infected with herpes.
