Details about rheumatoid arthritis treatmentRhumatoid arthritis is a chronic, auto immune, progressive disease causing inflammation of joints. The symptoms of the disease are swelling, stiffness, and pain. Giving first line drugs like aspirin and cortisone can treat this disease condition. These drugs are fast acting that reduces the pain and inflammation. Administering second line drugs such as gold, hydroxy chloroquine can also treat this disease. These drugs are slow acting .These drugs are not inflammatory agents. They prevent tissue damage caused by inflammation. There are some drugs that are also used in rheumatoid arthritis. They are leflunomide [avara], eternercept[enbrecet], infliximab[remicade], adalimumab[humira]. Deleflunomide [avara] is a newer second line drug. Avara is used to relieve the symptoms and also prevent the progression of the disease. The possible side effects are liver tissue damage, loss of hair, rashes etc. Avara should never be taken during pregnancy as it may cause birth defects. There are few biological medications or biological response modifiers that are used to treat rhumatoid arthritis. They are anakinra[kineret], infliximab[remicade], adalimub[humira], eternercept[enbrecet]. These medicines have faster onset of action. They are more powerful to prevent the joint damage. Enbrecet and humira should be administered subcutaneously. Remicade is given intravenously. The biological response modifiers are comparatively more expensive than traditional medicines like aspirin and cortisone. There are few other treatments. They are fish oil usage. Fish oil has anti-inflammatory effect. The effect of cartilage preparation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is yet to be proved. Oral administration of acetaminophen can give symptomatic pain relief. Antibiotics like tetracycline, and mino cycline when given, produce mild to moderate improvement in the symptoms of arthritis. The parts of the body that are affected other than the joints are treated individually. Sjogrens syndrome can be treated by artificial tears or by humidifying the room or office. Early antibiotic treatment and early eye check ups are important for the faster recovery of the rheumatoid arthritis affecting the eye.
